The Story

" I was having a really bad day. My cat had been sick for a few days and was quarantined in my room all night. He didn't like that very much. After a long night of no sleep because he wouldn't stop meowing at the door I arrived at work to discover a technique I had been working on for weeks didn't work, again.

At lunch I talked to Brett and he promised that the day would get better. I was skeptical, but appreciated that he was trying to make me feel better. It was about this time that I received a message from my sister that said "So I guess you've seen Brett's Facebook status already," I hadn't so I checked it out. His status was simply "Today is the day." I still didn't catch on, Brett is always leaving random cryptic messages. When I responded to my sister to see what the big deal was she quickly signed off. I went on with my day and around 4:00 a man showed up at my lab with a bouquet of red and white roses.

The card attached to the flowers had a DNA sequence printed on it, I love that we are both science nerds! Once I translated the DNA sequence to its single letter amino acid code the message then read "Let get dinner I need 2 make a verbal agreement 2 kiss." You have to excuse the numbers and grammar because there isn't an amino acid single letter code that is an O or an S. The line "I need to make a verbal agreement to kiss" is a line from a song that we both love and quote to each other. The rest of the lyric is "We should make a verbal agreement to only kiss each other." At that point I knew something was up.

About five minutes after I translated the message my phone rang. It was Brett calling to tell me that he was at my apartment picking out a dress for me to wear. He was going to be outside my office building in 15 minutes and I had better be ready to go! When he got there I was so excited I could barely sit still. We got in the car and he took off. He brought my favorite blue dress and a pair of black shoes. He even brought a Red Bull to help me stay awake. We drove to a secluded beach along the Chesapeake Bay, and we arrived right before sunset.

Fortunately, the only people on the beach besides us were several parasailers. We walked to the edge of the beach and after Brett said some very romantic things he said "We should make a verbal agreement to only kiss each other and we should commemorate it in front of our family and friends, Jen will you marry me!"

I screamed "Yes" and started kissing him before he was even able to get down on one knee.

Eventually he was able to kneel and presented me with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. We spent the next hour or so sitting on the beach and enjoying the moment. After we left the beach we contacted our families and then we went for a wonderful dinner in a nearby town. That evening the town had a summer festival so after dinner we walked on the boardwalk listened to the live music and ate ice cream. It was the best day of my life! So far! "
